Yesterday the Metropolitan Police received two reports from people who had been the victims of a pickpocket in downtown Reykjavík. The incidences took place within 11 minutes of each other, and the same method was employed in both cases: The thief reached into the victim’s handbag and snatched a phone without anyone noticing.
According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the police has been receiving a growing number of complaints over pickpockets. Pickpockets and thefts of this kind were virtually unknown in Iceland only a few years ago, although they are quite common in many larger cities. The police encourages people to be vigilant, especially when they are travelling downtown. People are especially advised never to leave their wallets, or valuables like phones or laptops unattended at cafés, bars or restaurants.
We at Iceland Insider can only second that advice. Even if Iceland can be magical and the locals friendly, there is no reason to abandon common sense!
