Police Special Forces arrest a man “with a history of violence” after standoff in Capital Region 1804

A man in his 40s was arrested in the municipality of Hafnarfjörður, a suburb in the Capital Region at one in the morning, following a siege by Police Special Forces of the man’s apartment.

All traffic in and out of the neighbourhood had been closed, lasted several hours. The man, who had a history of violence, had assaulted and threatened police officers, announcing he had a gun. Residents in the neighbourhood reported that they had heard gunshots.

A history of violence
According to an announcement by the Metropolitan Police a neighbour had complained a ten last night over loud noises coming from an apartment in an apartment building. When police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter they discovered the racket had come from the apartment of a man in his forties who has a history of violence. The police have on numerous occasions had to deal with the man in question.

The man became extremely agitated when officers arrived at the scene and attacked the officers. When they attempted to arrest them man he managed to escape into his apartment. Once inside the apartment he made threats, warning that he was armed with a firearm. Residents in the neighbourhood told police they had heard gunshots earlier. As in all cases where firearms are involved the Metropolitan Police called in Special Forces, who are armed, unlike the Met Police.

Speculation on Facebook
A large number of Police officers and patrol cars in the area caused considerable concern among people, as did the fact that police closed off all traffic in and out of the neighbourhood. The operations caused a considerable stir in the neighbourhood, especially because no information was forthcoming from the police.

The public only learned what was going on around midnight when a City official joined the conversation in the Facebook group of residents in the to explain what was going on. 

The standoff ended at one in the morning when the man was finally arrested. At 1:34 am the Metropolitan Police finally issued their announcement on Facebook, explaining what had happened:
