A major police operation at several rental car companies resulted in license plates being removed from 49 cars which lacked insurance. Most of the cars were from one company.
The operation was launched after officers patrolling the Ring Road had noticed several rental cars which lacked insurance. The cars were always registered to the same car rental company. Recently Police in North Iceland stopped a traveler who was going 137 km/h (85 mph) where the speed limit is 90 km/h (56 mph). The man had four children in the back seat of the vehicle, which was uninsured. Officers cited the traveler for speeding and removed the plates from the vehicle. The traveler and children were then taken to the nearest town.
As these sightings increased in number the Police in Suðurnes district decided to check the entire fleets of five major rental companies operating in the district. The Suðurnes police district includes Keflavík International Airport.
The officers found no problems at all but two of the companies. The plates were removed from six vehicles at one company, and 43 at another. A spokesperson for the Police told the National Broadcasting Service that the reason for the cars being uninsured was simple oversight, rather than criminal intent. The employees of the company took immediate steps to rectify the issue and pay the insurance on the vehicles.
