A police officer at the Seyðisfjörður Police Department, East Iceland, has been accused of stealing. The officer is thought to have stolen money that foreigners had paid in fines for traffic offences.
Guðbrandur Sigurðsson, duty officer at the Metropolitan Traffic Police, claims the department has a strict set of rules that officers are to follow when issuing fines to foreigners in order to prevent such incidents.
He explains in an interview with Fréttablaðið newspaper that police officers can only accept credit cards and not cash when collecting fines.
The incident regarding the police officer in Seyðisfjörður has been informed to the State prosecutor and will be investigated by the Eskifjörður Police Department in East Iceland.
