On Tuesday afternoon the local Police and the Police Special Forces, called “The Viking Squad”, laid siege to an apartment building in Kópavogur, a suburb of reykjavík, following reports that shots had been heard at the building. The police suspected that a gunman had fired shots from the balcony of one of apartments.

At 16.40 members of the Special Forces entered the apartment building, which stands by Hlíðarhjalli Street in Kópavogur, a municipality in the Capital Region, south of Reykjavík. The Special Forces were accompanied by a negotiator, and a sharpshooter was in place by the building. Other inhabitants in the apartment building were evacuated while the police attempted to establish contact with the suspected gunman. Schools in the vicinity were also alerted and parents instructed to escort their children home.

The siege lasted a total of six hours, at which time it became clear that the apartment in question was empty. According to the police it turns out the man has not been at home for the past few days.

Shots have been fired at the fence and cars in the parking lot
The police has been called to the same building in the past investigating suspicion that shots have been fired from one of its apartments. On Monday police found clear evidence someone had fired a shotgun at the fence surrounding the building.

In April Police was alerted to the fact that someone had shot at a car in the parking lot of the same apartment building. At the time the Police believed the shots had come from an airgun, but the car’s owner told local news service Vísir that it had been obvious the car had been shot at with a shotgun. “I don’t care about the crappy car, but at the time I felt the police was making too light of the whole issue”, he told visir.

After the siege on Tuesday ended the police entered the apartment and confiscated a firearm and ammunition.
