Police called on traveller flying a drone in downtown Reykjavík 3443

The Metropolitan Police was called to the downtown lake Tjörnin on Sunday morning to talk to a foreign traveller who had been flying an aerial drone over the lake. Operating aerial drones over Tjörnin poses significant risks as the approach to Reykjavíkurflugvöllur, the downtown airport, passes over the lake.

The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that when officers arrived at the scene the man was gone. According to Police the man had most likely been alerted tot he fact that he was engaged in dangerous and illegal activity.

According to recently passed restrictions on the use of aerial drones in Iceland it is illegal to operate aerial drones within 2 km (1.2 miles) from airports. The ban means all of downtown Reykjavík is effectively off-limits to drones. The rules were introduced following a number of close encounters between planes or helicopters which were coming in for landing at Reykjavík airport and aerial drones.
