Landvernd, Iceland's largest Nature Conservation NGO, received 17.9 million ISK (182,000 USD/147,000 EUR) from WOW air. The money will be used to pay for various projects Landvernd is working on, including the creation of a new National Park covering the Central Highlands, reforestation and reclaiming of wetlands.
Every small bit helps
Passengers on WOW air flights are asked to donate any pocket change they might have left over after their stay in Iceland. The money is collected onboard WOW air flights with the promise by the airline to match the donations. Passengers are promised the money goes to fund the protection of Icelandic nature.

According to a statement from WOW air a total of 8.9 million Icelandic króna (90,000 USD/73,000 EUR) in pocket change was collected onboard the airline's planes. The airline then matched this donation.
More small change is needed!
We at Iceland Insider welcome this donation. It is good to see businesses which profit from the massive influx of tourism taking a responsible stand, helping to protect the resource their business relies on: The natural beauty of Iceland. It is also also good to see an example of small donations actually adding up to meaningful amounts which can make a difference.
But of course this is just a tiny step and much more is needed. Consider this: The 8.9 million krona in pocket change was collected over a year. WOW flew some 3 million passengers in 2017. If we assume that every passenger booked a two way ticket to Iceland some very cursory back-of-the envelope calculations reveal that each passenger only left 6 Icelandic króna in change, or 6 pennies.
We understand that those fish-coins are fun souvenirs, but we are convinced the average visitor leaves Iceland with more unneded change!
Together we can protect Icelandic nature. Every person only needs to do two things: Don't damage nature, stay on the road or path, and don't litter. And make a small donation to the people who are working hard to protect Icelandic wilderness and nature.
