Plans to increase the size of forests tenfold; woodlands now cover 1.2% of the country 989

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that in a policy report regarding forests and forestry in Iceland, a committee has issued enthusiastic plans for Iceland’s forest area to increase tenfold by the end of this century.

Jón Loftsson, who is general manager of the Icelandic Forest Service, headed the committee. The total area of Icelandic forests would grow from being currently 1.2% of Iceland’s area (103,000 km2/39,768.5 sq miles) to consisting of up to 12% of Iceland’s land mass by 2100.
