Plans to break the roads to safe bridges from collapsing in the case of a glacial flood 1314

The Icelandic Road Administration staff wants to be prepared should a glacial flood occur so that the bridges across Jökulsá á Fjöllum river won’t be destroyed.

As reported by ruv.is, changing the floods’ course by breaking open the roads in the area lessens the stress on the bridges and relieves the economic strain a bridge destruction would cause. Three bridges cross the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river and all would be in danger of collapsing in a glacial flood.

Should a glacial flood occur, the flow of the river is expected to increase to 5,000-20,000 meters cubed per second compared to the 600 meters cubed per second it is now.

Employees at the Icelandic Road Administration spent yesterday looking for where it’d be best to break open the road should a glacial flood occur as a result of the seismic activity in Bárðarbunga subglacial volcano.
