Planning permission has been granted by the Hveragerði Council for a new hostel and spa facilities in the Ölfusdalur area, South Iceland, reports Vísir. The proposed development will be financed by First ehf.
Hveragerði and its surroundings are rich with geothermal energy, which the new spa will utilise. “The 65 room hostel will provide affordable accommodation and the spa will include a natural pool, mud baths, and steam baths. The area will be developed in three stages: the first involves constructing a parking lot and a service centre, the second is to build the baths, and the third and final stage is constructing the hostel,” said Ólafur Sigurðsson, First’s marketing and developing manager. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.
The mayor of Hveragerði, Aldís Hafsteinsdóttir, welcomes further development in the area. “There is a plethora of beautiful hiking trails in and around Hveragerði and the town in well situated by the Ring Road,” she said.
