The Icelandic daily newspaper Fréttablaðið reported today that a hot water fissure in the Vaðlaheiði tunnel has caused considerable delay in construction. Due to the fissure, the amount of steaming water has raised the temperature of the tunnel to 28-30 degrees Celsius (82-86 F), making it impossible for laborers to work the entire day.
Attempts were made today to close the fissure and for a while the amount of water decreased from 380 liters to 200 liters per second.
Valgeir Bergmann, managing director of the project, told Fréttablaðið that this fissure has derailed construction considerably since only five meters have been dug since the fissure, whereas before it had been 60-70 meters per week.
