Photos: Yarn bombing and “knitting graffiti” takes over the town of Blönduós in North Iceland 4979

6. sep 2016 11:59

The women of the town of Blönduós in North Iceland have been busy the past several weeks, covering lampposts, signposts and bridge railings with woolen “graffiti”. The group, which coordinates its actions through a Facebook page “Prjónagraff á Blönduósi”, which translates as “Blönduós Knitting Graffiti”, has been busy all winter preparing yarn bombs which are now being put up all over town.

The goal, according to the Facebook page, is not just to decorate the town and make it more colourful, but to welcome the guests to a knitting festival which will be held over the weekend, “Prjónagleði 2016”. This is the second time knitting enthusiasts in Blönduós decorate the town with yarn bombs. Last year the town was similarly decorated for the knitting festival, but this year's preparation began earlier and has been more extensive.

The knitting festival, which is organized by the Icelandic Textile Centre, starts tomorrow, Friday 10 June, and continues through Sunday 12 June. You can find all further information about the festival at the web page of The Textile Centre.
