Carpenter Hákon Kjalar Hjördísarson and his dog Skuggi are the island’s only residents, having moved there in May. “I wanted to realise my life-long dream of building a self-sufficient home on the island,” Hákon explains. Since June, the duo has welcomed guests to share their small island paradise with them.
The isle is located on Þjórsá river, only a 30-minute drive from Selfoss. Included in the price is transportation across the river, a guided tour of the island and a home-cooked meal made from freshly caught salmon from Þjórsá river. Traustholtshólmi is also quite conveniently located and there is much to explore in the surrounding area, including Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerið.
