Photos of the magnificent aurora caused by yesterday's geomagnetic storm 6118

3. feb 2017 07:59

Yesterday a moderate geomagnetic storm washed over the earth, causing a particularly spectacular Northern Lights. Thanks to clear skies over most of Iceland we were treated to a spectacular show throughout the night and early morning.

The storm intensity last night was Kp 6, which can produce truly magnificent Aurora. Although an intensity as low as 3 can produce a dazzling Aurora, activity levels of 5 and up generate the truly spectacular Northern Lights which can fill the entire sky. The unforgettable shows you won't forget! Unless, of course, you actually live in a place like Iceland, where these shows come on a dozen times at least each winter. But even then, some nights are particularly spectacular!

Last night was a strong candidate for those unforgettable nights. Maksym Gryshchenko, an Ukrainian photographer who lives in Iceland captured the following pictures of the Aurora last night. You can check out Maksym's work at his website infocus.is.

(If you missed last night: Don't worry. Tonight's Aurora forecast is also really good: An activity index of 4 and mostly clear skies: The perfect conditions for a great Aurora sighting!)
