Later today the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden will be debuting “Ed Force One”, a Boing 747-400 Jumbo jet which will ferry the band around the globe on its upcoming world tour. The plane, which has been specially decorated for the occasion is being rented from the Icelandic airline Air Atlanta.
The plane arrived in Cardiff in Wales early this morning after having been decorated in Dubai. The official unveiling of the plane will take place in the presence of representatives of all major media outlets in the UK, as well as Iceland Insider’s Jón Kaldal.
According to Jón, who is reporting from Cardiff, Ed Force One will be piloted by none other than Bruce Dickinson the lead singer of Iron Maiden. Dickinson is an experienced and licensed commercial pilot, having piloted planes on two previous Iron Maiden world tours. But since Ed Force One is a Jumbo Jet Dickinson had to go back to flight school to acquire the necessary licenses to fly a Boing 747-400. The Boing 747-400 is twice the size of Boeing 757, which is one of the most commonly used passenger jets.
A crew from Air Atlanta will accompany Dickinson on the tour which will last five months.
Air Atlanta did not only change the outside of the plane, emblazoning it with the name of the tour, the band and a giant picture of the ghoulish signature figure of Iron Maiden, Ed the Head, the insides had to be adapted to the needs of the band. Among the changes was the addition of a cocktail bar.
In addition to the members of the band and their entourage the plane will be ferrying a small army of roadies and half a ton of equipment and instruments.
The upcoming Iron Maiden world tour, which is called “The Book of Souls Tour” will take the band to 35 different countries. The first concert will be in Fort Lauderdale in Florida on February 24.
