Junebug Weddings, a online wedding planning company located in Texas, which helps people organize weddings as well as capture the moment for all of eternity, holds an annual Wedding Photo competition where they pick out the most beautiful and captivating wedding photos of the year. This year three of the fifty final choices, picked out from over 9,000 entries, were taken in Iceland.
The photo above, shot at Fjaðrárgljúfur in South Iceland is one, taken by Tricia Victoria Photography. Another photo, taken by Sara Byrne was shot on the beach near the village of Vík, also in South Iceland.
The back story to the photo, shared by Sara Byrne on Instagram is a great read!
A little story behind the photo.. It was dark overcast, the sun was almost set and we had just driven 2 hours to see the black sand beaches. When we arrived the wind was so strong you could barely open the car door without fear of it being blown the wrong direction. The rain was sideways but we had come there for a reason, no turning back now. We said f#@% it and Kim and Chris jumped from the car and started running towards the beach in their wedding clothes. I jumped from the car not fully prepared and started running full speed trying to catch up.
They were on a high having just said their vows next to a serene waterfall earlier that day. I ran beside them as the rain beat down on my camera. I was firing away praying that something was in focus and wiping the rain from my lens every few seconds. The wind was so strong it was hard to walk straight.
We were out there less than 10 minutes but as we ran back the wind pushed against us trying to stop us from moving forward. I let my hood fly off as we were running and felt the water beating down on my head and neck. Just before I jumped back in the car I stopped, closed my eyes, and tilted my head up towards the sky.
Sara Byrne's website offers examples of other weddings she has shot in Iceland, including this beautiful shot taken at Seljalandsfoss waterfall in South Iceland:
This photo is taken at a gorge in South Iceland we at Iceland Insider were unable to identify
The third photo in the selection of the 50 best wedding photos of 2016 is this magnificient shot, taken at Skógafoss which offers a striking background to a photo shot by Lukas Patek.
The Skógafoss photo also has a beautiful back story, and it comes from a beautiful collection of photos shot on the same occasion in other locations in South Iceland:
This Iceland wedding was the biggest experience I have had so far as a wedding photographer. Words can not express the impressions and emotions that happened during this adventure. Jasmine & Patrick contacted me nearly a year ago to cover their elopement in Iceland.
… This wonderful Iceland wedding started with the getting ready in our wonderful little apartment, hidden in the Icelandic hinterland. A place so remote and tranquil, that gave us the possibility for a perfect start.
We then headed to the actual ceremony, which happened in the majestic Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. After that, we went out into the Icelandic night, that never gets dark in June, and embraced the atmosphere at some other locations.
The following 2 days gave us multiple opportunities to capture the beauty of this country and connection between two unique human beings. Thank you for everything Jasmine & Patrick.
The rest of the photos from the wedding, posted on Lukas Patek's website are equally beautiful. Including this one, taken at Fjaðrárglúfur:
