Two German phtographers, Lars Lehnert and Stefan Christmann captured amazing photographs of a massive dust devil by the mount Hjörleifshöfði near the village Vík in South Iceland. The German photographers were driving west along the ring road, nearing Vík when they spotted the dust devil to their south. After it danced along the black sands to the south of the road the funnel disappeared behind Hjörleifshöfði.

Dust devils can form on the black sand beaches of South Iceland when cold air blows from the glaciers down to lower ground where it meets warm air coming from the opposite direction.

Sandstorms are common in South Iceland, especially during dry weather in the summer months. In dry conditions and strong winds the black volcanic sand from the beaches can turn extremely dangerous to motorists, stripping the paint off cars. Since rental car insurance does not cover damage caused by sandstorms, these storms have left many travellers with sizeable bills.
