Shortly after eight last night a fire broke out in a windshield repair shop at Grettisgata 87 in downtown Reykjavík. The local news site visir.is reports that although firefighters were quickly able to contain the fire operations at the site continued into the night. The fire had been extinguished at 3:30 in the morning.
The shop, which was located in a block adjacent to the bus stop square Hlemmur, was totally destroyed in the fire, as is most, if not all of the building. The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that Police is seeking two unidentified men who were seen at the building shortly before the fire broke out.
The fire produced a thick noxious smoke, due to the various industrial materials in the repair shop. Residents in nearby buildings were advised to close their windows and stay inside. Many, however, were forced to flee their homes due to the noxious fumes and smoke from the fire.
The metropolitan bus service provided a bus to these people to stay in while the smoke cleared. A response unit from the Red Cross assisted nearby residents, some of whom could not return to their homes until early this morning. The smoke blanketed much of downtown Reykjavík and could be smelled from far away.
