Most people probably don't think of camping when they arrive at the top of frigid Snæfellsjökull glacier in West Iceland. However, that's exactly what a local doctor and experienced hiker did this week.
Tómas Guðbjartsson is a heart surgeon and noted hiker and environmentalist. On a hike and ski trip up Snæfellsjökull glacier on the Snæfellsnes peninsula this week, Tómas put up his tent right at the approximately 1,450 meter high summit called Miðþúfa, with steep slopes all around.
We reached Miðþúfa (1,447 m) just before midnight. Conditions were excellent and I could ski all the way down from the top. Decided to put up my tent at the top of Miðþúfa and succeeded despite substantial wind, Tómas wrote on Facebook.
He and his companions didn't spend the night at the top, though. He said that despite being rather small, the camp site was certainly among the most impressive in Iceland.
