One of the most beautifully named waterfall in Iceland is Gljúfrasmiður. The name, which has a strong poetic element to it, translates as The Canyon Forger.

Gljúfrasmiður is one of several spectacular waterfalls in Jökulsá á Fjöllum. The best known waterfall in the river is Dettifoss. Nearby Selfoss and Hrafnagilsfoss are also popular stops. Gljúfrasmiður is further south, deep in the Central Highlands near Herðubreiðarlindir highland oasis.

Jökulsá á Fjöllum is one of the great whitewater rivers in Iceland, carrying meltwater from Dyngjujökull glacier, one of the outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull. The river runs 206 km (128 mi) to the north across the Central Highlands to Öxarfjörður fjord in the north. Gljúfrasmiður is one of the many hidden gems of the Central Highlands, difficult to reach, but well worth the trip.

The river plunges into a tight canyon, polishing the rocks into various strange shapes. The canyons downstream from the waterfall are no less spectacular. Hiking along the canyon, seeing and feeling the raw power of nature, surrounded by the burned volcanic deserts north of Vatnajökull, leaves no nature-lover untouched.
