Garðskagaviti, one of Iceland's most picturesque lighthouses is located on Garðskagi, the North-West tip of Reykjanes peninsula. The lightouse was built in 1897 by the Royal Danish Lightouse Commission. Standing 11.4 meters (37 ft) tall, it is the second oldest concrete structure in Iceland. The lighthouse remained in operation until 1944, when a new, larger lighthouse was constructed. The new Garðskagaviti is significantly taller, standing 28.6 m (94 ft).
After decommission the old Garðskagaviti stood as a monument to a bygone age. In 2016, more than 60 years after going into retirement the lighthouse found new purpse in life, now as a toursit destination. Röstin Restaurant, which operates in the Garðskagi Heritage and Maritime museum, outfitted a small café in the lighthouse. The Old Lighthouse Café is on four floors, seating a total of 25 people.
