Downtown Reykjavík has been transformed in recent years. This transformation has been particularly dramatic around the downtown harbor.
This photo, which is taken from the top of Arnarhóll hill, gives us a glimpse of the changes. The wooden causeway which provided access to a rooftop parking lot on Tollhúsið, which currently houses the Reykjavík flea-market Kolaportið, was torn down in 1995.
The photo was posted in a local Facebook group where Icelanders share old photos, where it sparked a conversation about the changes taking place in downtown Reykjavík. While opinions differ, most people who commented on the photo agreed that the area around the harbor has neither been made more beautiful nor vibrant with the current development which includes a new 5-star hotel. We at Iceland Insider are torn on the question: We don't miss the giant parking lots which dominated downtown Reykjavík in the 80s and 90s, but we also miss some of the views that have disappeared with new high-rise buildings.
