A trash can in downtown Reykjavík has been transformed into a bold statement on tolerance, as some enterprising street artist has stenciled instructions on the can, directing people to Keep Reykjavík clean by leaving their homophobia, sexism and racism in the can. A photo of the can, posted by a local man, Kjartan Valgarðsson, has gone viral, with more than 200 shares since yesterday.
Elected officials at Reykjavík City who spoke to Iceland Insider had no information on who was responsible for the pointed message, saying they first heard of the activist art on social media. Since the artwork is unauthorized it is technically graffiti. The city keeps graffiti on city property in check, but considering the large number of unsightly graffiti on city trash cans and other public property, it seems likely the message will remain in place for some time!
