According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service there are plans to move the ferry sea-route between Scandinavia and Iceland from Seyðisfjörður to Eskifjörður over the winter months. This is because heavy snow and icy road conditions often result in the closure of the Fjarðarheiði mountain road which connects Seyðisfjörður to the region´s capital, Egilsstaðir.
The people of Seyðisfjörður wrote a letter to ministers and members of parliament yesterday morning, expressing their concerns regarding these plans. They fear dozens of service jobs will be lost should the ferry terminal not be used over the winter.
The town of Seyðisfjörður on the east coast of Iceland has been the port for Norræna, the ferry between Scandinavia and Iceland, for decades. The town of Eskifjörður lies 21 km (13 miles) south of Seyðisfjörður.
Seyðisfjörður is a community heavily in debt and it’s obvious that should we lose the revenue generated with Norræna, we’ll be on government support for the next decades.
Two hundred passengers and 37 vehicles arrived in Seyðisfjörður with Norræna yesterday. During the summer months the number of passengers grows to around 1100. The inhabitants of Seyðisfjörður fear the intended change will in time prove to be more permanent and not only limited to winter.
“It’s quite clear the town of Eskifjörður would never invest in the infrastructure needed to service the ferry and its passengers unless it was on a permanent long-term basis. Seyðisfjörður is a community heavily in debt and it’s obvious that should we lose the revenue generated with Norræna, we’ll be on government support for the next decades,” explains local Sigfinnur Mikaelsson adding: “The community, local companies and individuals in Seyðisfjörður have also invested greatly in Norræna to ensure it keeps sailing to Seyðisfjörður port.”
