Icelandic cinnamon-buns, known as ‘snúður’, have become a hit in St John’s on Newfoundland island off Canada's Atlantic coast. The buns are available in the newly opened Volcano Bakery, owned by baker Haukur Leifs Hauksson, which specializes in Icelandic-style breads and Danishes.
Haukur, who has run three bakeries in Iceland, and his wife Aðalbjörg Sigurþórsdóttir moved to St John’s in 2013 for work. Haukur claims he had some reservations about opening an Icelandic bakery in Newfoundland as he was unsure whether locals would fall for the ‘snúðar’ and sugar-free Icelandic bread.
“Our first day was a complete success,” Haukur told Morgunblaðið newspaper. “Our customers love the Icelandic cinnamon buns, especially the ones with the white glazing. They’re not too crazy about the chocolate glazing yet.”
The couple have settled in nicely in St John’s – an easy task as the locals are extremely friendly, Haukur says.
