Passersby came to the aid of foreign cyclist injured in accident on Sólheimasandur 7272

Passersby came to the aid of an injured traveler on the Ring Road on Sólheimasandur plain early yesterday evening. The traveler, a woman who is a traveling around Iceland on bicycle, had fallen off her bike after losing control of the bicycle and landing on the side of the road. She was conscious bud had injured her leg in the accident.

The accident took place near the parking lot and path to the DC 3 plane wreck on Sólheimasandur black sand beach. A strong gust of wind created by a semi-trailer truck which passed the woman caused her to lose control of the bicycle with the aforesaid consequences.

Paramedics from the nearby village Vík arrived at the scene shortly after nine and took the woman to the hospital in the town of Selfoss in South Iceland where her injuries were attended to.

Note: The Ring Road and other roads in Iceland have either no or very narrow shoulders. Drivers must therefore show extra caution when passing cyclists on the road.
