In April 2016 overnight stays in hotels in Iceland were 227,400 compared to 175,798 in April 2015, an increase of 29%, new figures from Statistics Iceland reveal. The increase was greatest in the North and East, 91% and 79% respectively.
Most of the increase came from a growth in the number of foreign visitors. The largest groups came from the US (50,800 overnight stays), UK (45,000) and Germany (16,000). The total occupancy ratio for hotel bedrooms in April was 59.2%. However, the ratio was significantly higher for the capital region, where it was 72.4%.

The year-over-year increase in April is in line with the overall annual growth. The number of overnight stays during the last twelve months, May 2015 to April 2016 was 3,095,600, which is an increase of 27% compared to the previous year.
