Amtmannsstígur runs past the north side of iconic Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík school building in downtown Reykjavík. Its peculiar name is drawn from amtmaður, the official title of one of the highest ranking officials in Iceland under Danish rule from the 17th to the start of the 20th century.
