The number of Costco members in Iceland has now surpassed 60,000. This means that one in four Icelanders 18 years and older is now a member of the US based members-only warehouse retailer.
Steven Pappas, the Senior Vice President of Costco Europe, told the local newspaper Fréttablaðið that the opening in the metropolitan suburb of Garðabær on May 23 was Costco’s largest opening in a new market since the company was founded. The previous record was held by Melbourne in Australia.
Costco has not published sales figures for the first two weeks at the new store, but Pappas told Fréttablaðið that the store had done as well as stores in far larger markets in Japan, Korea and the UK.
