Only a third of voters trust any of the cabinet members of ruling centre-right coalition 1064

According to a new poll by the local newspaper Fréttablaðið, TV station Stöð 2 and news site visir.is only a third of voters are willing to name a member of the administration they trust. Of those who can name a government minister they trust, most say they trust the minister of finance, Bjarni Benediktsson.

The poll, which was conducted on March 8 and 9, asked respondents which government minister they trusted most. 67% could not name any minister they could say they trusted, were unsure or otherwise refused to answer. Out of the 22% who were willing to name a member of the administration most identified Bjarni Benediktsson, the chairman of the conservative Independence Party, or 40%. The Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, chairman of the centre-right Progressive Party was only named by 17% of those who were willing to name a minister they trusted.

The most recent opinion poll shows the conservative Independence Party enjoys the support 27.6% of voters, which is nearly identical to the 26.7% the party received in the 2013 election. At the same time the centre-right Progressive Party’s support has been halved, from 24.4% in the elections to 12.8%. The Pirate Party continues to poll as the largest party, with 38.1% of voters saying they would vote for the party if elections were held today.
