The police has not released any further information about the cause of the accident, but according to media reports conditions at the scene were challenging due to ice on the road. Shortly before the bus rolled over it collided with a passenger vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, who was also a foreign traveller, had suddenly slowed down to turn off the road to a scenic viewing spot.

The National Broadcasting Service reports that relatives of the victims are on their way to Iceland.
