All available Reykjavík fire patrol units were on call yesterday due to a huge fire in the east side of the city in the Skeifan area. The fire started in a dry cleaning operator named Fönn and reached other businesses within the 8.500 square meters big building with devastating effects.
According, to fire patrol chief Þorvaldur, on vísir.is, “the houses were completely on fire when we arrived on the scene. The main cause was located and it managed to spread into the Griffil store. Not only did we put out the fire but we managed to stop it from spread it further”
The situation was critical apparently due to the many chemicals within the building where the fire originated. The black clouds of smoke could be seen from most of Reykjavík and including to Keflavík.
The owner of the restaurant Tandoori, Linda Lou Arthúr, which was one of the establishments that caught on fire, stated on vísir.is that: “one seldom sees such a great blaze in Iceland”.
