A small one engine Cessna aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on the main road along Þingvallavatn lake this afternoon. The emergency landing took place on one of the busiest stretches of the road, near the intersection of Þingvallvatnasvegur, road 36, and Gjábakkavegur, road 365, which connects Þingvallavatn lake and Laugarvatn village. The Golden Circle, one of the most popular day tours from Reykjavík, runs along roads 36 and 365.
A spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that there had been unusually little traffic on the road when the emergency landing took place. No one was injured, and the emergency landing did not cause any delays to traffic. The plane was moved to the side of the road. The Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the incidence.
