Ólöf Nordal appointed as Iceland's new Minister of Interior 2044

12. apr 2014 12:29

Ólöf Nordal has been appointed Minister of the Interior. She will replace Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir who resigned from her post in late November after her assistant, Gísli Freyr Valdórsson, confessed to leaking information about an asylum seeker to the press.

Ólöf was born in 1966 and is a member of the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn). News of her appointment came as a surprise to many as Einar K. Guðfinnsson and Ragnheiður Ríkharðsdóttir had widely been considered Hanna Birna’s most likely successors.

Ólöf will formally be inaugurated later today at the presidential residence Bessastaðir.
