The number of tourists visiting Þingvellir National Park increased by 77 percent in ten years, according to a new study conducted by Rannsókn og ráðgjöf ferðaþjónustunnar (Tourism Research and Consultancy). 332 thousand guests visited Þingvellir in 2004 while an estimated 588 thousand guests will visit the national park this year.
According to RÚV the number of tourists visiting Þingvellir during the winter months has also increased considerably, from 21 thousand in 2004 to 71 thousand in 2013. Asked whether other people visiting the area affected the quality of the tourism experience, most people answered in the negative.
