According to Mbl.is, the number of prisoners getting a higher education while serving a sentence has never been higher. Seventy per cent of prisoners in the Litla-Hraun and Sogn prisons were enrolled in school at the beginning of the year.
As of this year, seventy prisoners were getting a higher education, four of whom were studying at a university level. This will create opportunities for them when returning to society and decrease the likelihood of re-arrests.
“This is of course very positive seen as education reduces the likelihood of re-arrests of released prisoners,” said Páll E. Winkel, the director of the Icelandic Prison Service.
