Number of overnight stays increased by 15% in 2013 381

The total number of overnight stays at hotels, hostels and other accommodation establishments in Iceland was 4.3 million in 2013. That is a 15% increase compared with 2012 according to new report from Statistics Iceland.

Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 79% of the total number of overnight stays in 2013 and increased by 17% compared with previous year. At the same time overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 8%. From 2012 to 2013 the number of overnight stays increased in all types of accommodation establishments.

The total number of overnight stays has increased by 42.5% over the last five years. With new hotels and hostels accommodation spaces have increased significantly during this time in Iceland, but so has the use of the accommodation. Utilization rates at hotels and hostels was 54.3% last year and 46.2% in 2009.

Most overnight stays in 2013 were spent by tourists from Germany, Britain and USA.
