Number of Icelanders reaches 340,000, foreign citizens make up 9.25% of population 6266

The population of Iceland at the end of the first quarter of 2017 was 340,110, the latest population figures from Statistics Iceland reveal. The population increased by 1,660 from the previous quarter. The population grew by 0,48% during the first quarter, which equals an annual growth rate of 1.92%.

Immigration and re-migration
Most of the increase came from immigration. A total of 940 children were born in the 1st quarter and 600 persons died. Net migration was positive by 1,300 persons. The positive net migration was made up by foreign nationals moving to Iceland, as well as Icelandic citizens moving back home after having lived abroad. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was positive by 130. Net migration among foreign citizens was positive by 1,170.

A total of 560 Icelandic citizens emigrated from Iceland during the first quarter. Most of these Icelanders emigrated to the other Nordic countries, 330 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. At the same time 680 Icelandic citizens immigrated to Iceland, most from the Nordic countries, 490 out of 680. 

The largest group of immigrants during the first quarter came from Poland, 570 out of the total 1,790 foreign citizens who immigrated. The largest group of the 620 foreign citizens who emigrated also went to Poland, 180.

The total number of foreign citizens living in Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter was 31,470, or 9.25% of the total population of Iceland. Inhabitants of the capital region were 218,090 and 122,020 lived outside the capital region.
