The growth of tourism shows no signs of reversal, even if the rate of growth in visitor numbers has slowed down significantly. According to the latest data from the Icelandic Tourism Board and Keflavík Airport some 232,000 foreign travelers visited Iceland in September, 28,000 more than in September 2017. The year-over-year increase is 13.6%, down from 16.3% in September 2017 and 42.5% in September 2016.

Estimates on the number of foreign travelers in Iceland are based on a count by the Icelandic Tourism Board and Keflavík Airport who monitor the numbers of foreign nationals who pass through the security gates when leaving Iceland. In September 231,681 foreign nationals left Keflavík Airport.
The Tourism Board notes that the composition of foreign travelers has changed since September 2017. The number of travelers from North America has increased by 17%, while the number of travelers from the Nordic countries, the UK and Central Europe all registered drops. Historically these have been the most important markets for the Icelandic tourism industry.
The largest single group of travelers came from the US. Americans made up about a third of all foreign travelers in Iceland in September. Germans made up the second largest group, followed by UK citizens with Canadians coming in fourth place. In September 82,346 US nationals visited Iceland, 16,310 Germans, 13,530 Brits and 12,590 Canadians.
