The 8th annual Northern Wave international short film festival kicks off in the small town of Grundarfjörður, a two-hour long drive from Reykjavík, today, 16th of October.
Founded by local filmmaker Dögg Mósesdóttir in 2008, the programme consists of both local and international short films and Iceland music videos. The films are screened in the town’s theatre, called Samkomuhúsið, while the music videos are shown at the local establishment, Rúben.
One of the festival’s highlights is its annual ‘fish banquet’ which takes place on Saturday evening. Local foodies gather to present their best seafood dishes of course made from locally caught fish. Renowned chef and restaurateur Hrefna Rósa Sætran serves as judge and will pick her favourite dish.
Grundarfjörður offers many activities for guests to enjoy between film screenings. The town’s landmark mountain, Mt. Kirkjufell, has been ranked as one of the 17 most majestic mountains by the popular website Mashable, whale watching tours are operated from the town’s harbour, and the neighbouring town of Stykkishólmur is also worth a visit.
