Northern lights research centre to be constructed in North Iceland 127

Plans are to construct a Northern Light Research Centre near Kárhóll in Reykjadalur, North Iceland. The building will be around 700 square metres in size (7534 square feet) and includes a research centre, visitors centre and a conference hall.

Aurora Observatory, an Icelandic private foundation, which was founded in 2013 will manage both the centre’s construction and its facilities along with the career development association of Þingeyri and Eyjafjörður, Kjarni ehf and Arctic Portal, owned by Halldór Jóhannsson who is the spokesman in Iceland for Chinese businessman Huang Nubo.

Numerous Icelandic and Chinese institutes will use the facilities for research.

In 2013 China’s Polar Research Institute was granted permision to build a Chinese-Icelandic northern lights observatory on the land of Kárhóll in Reykjadalur, following a cooperation agreement between research institutions of the two countries.
