A tour bus carrying 43 foreign passengers in Þingvellir national park rolled onto its side yesterday afternoon. Nobody was hurt in the accident. According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the passengers were German pensioners on of Iceland. It took a long time to evacuate the passengers out of the bus, as many have trouble walking.
Not a scratch
A spokesman for the police in South Iceland told the local news site Vísir that the accident turned out to be far less serious than initially feared, as it left not one scratch on the passengers, driver or guide.
Things went extremely well, and we can thank the quick reactions of the driver and the tour guide. Nobody was hurt, not one scratch on a single passenger. It was pretty remarkable.
The cause of the accident seems to be that the bus met a delivery van where the road turns. The van appears to have been taking a wide turn, heading straight for the bus whose driver was therefore faced with two bad options, either driving right onto the van, or going onto the narrow shoulder of the road. He chose the shoulder, which collapsed from under the weight of the bus.
Police, ICE-SAR were busy at Gullfoss
Search and Rescue units, as well as police officers and ambulances from South Iceland were dispatched to the scene, but due to the fact that all available units had already been called out to participate in the search for a man who went missing at Gullfoss waterfall not all were able to make it to the scene of the accident. Fortunately the bus accident turned out to have been far less serious than initially feared.
