Heavy snowfall in the past couple of days led to the closing down of mountain roads in East Iceland, including the road connecting the town of Seyðisfjörður with the rest of the country. Search and rescue units had to assist travellers stuck along the road. The snowfall also forced 952 passengers on the cruise ship Magellan, which came to the town on Wednesday, to remain in town, and miss out on sightseeing trips they had planned.
According to the National Broadcasting Service RÚV the Road Authority had managed yesterday morning to clear the Fjarðarheiði road, a road over Fjarðarheiði heath, which connects Seyðisfjörður with the ring road, but heavy snowfall over the day had made the road impassable soon afterwards. To ensure the safety of travellers the road was therefore closed down until the weather cleared up. The road has been opened since then, but travellers are adviced to show caution due to ice and fog.
