No serious injuries as public transit bus blown off the Ring Road in W. Iceland 7619

Nobody was seriously injured when a bus from Strætó, the Metropolitan Transit System, was blown off the Ring Road in West Iceland. The accident took place shortly before two in the afternoon in the foothills of mount Esja, just north of Reykjavík. The local news site Vísir reports that ten passengers were onboard the bus. Only one passenger suffered minor injuries in the accident.

The bus was coming from Akureyri in North Iceland to Reykjavík when the accident took place. The cause of the accident is not clear, but a spokesman for Strætó told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that the bus had just recently exited the tunnel beneath Hvalfjörður bay when the driver lost control of the vehicle. A severe gale is in the area, with individual windgusts reaching hurricane force: The bus seems simply to have been blown off the road.

The average windspeed in the area at the time of the accident was 27 m/s (60 mph).
