A small tour bus carrying 16 foreign travellers was blown off the road north of Reynisfjall mountain near the village Vík in South Iceland. Conditions at the scene were extremely difficult when the accident took place. Fortunately nobody was injured in the accident.
A Yellow Weather alert was in effect for the area west of Vík when the accident took place. Low visibility, caused by snowshowers and gale force winds, combined with icy roads made for extremely difficult driving conditions.
The Ring Road west of Vík, especially around Reynisfjall mountain, is notorious for dangerous windgusts which characterize storms in the area. Reynisfjall is the small mountain which separates the black sand beach Reynisfjara and the village of Vík. The road around the mountain is one of the more perilous passes on the Ring Road, due to the frequency of extremely powerful wind gusts around the mountain.
