Construction work has started on a five-star Marriott Edition hotel by Harpa concert hall by the old harbour in downtown Reykjavík. The hotel, which will have 250 rooms, is scheduled to open in 2018. One of the investors behind the new Marriott hotel is rumoured to be the world’s wealthiest man, Bill Gates. Bill Gates visited Iceland last year with his family, visiting some of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland.

The construction site has stood empty since the fall of 2008. At the time one of the three big Icelandic banks, failed Landsbankinn, was planning the construction of its headquarters at the site. The largest shareholders in Landsbankinn were two of Iceland’s wealthiest men, Björgólfur Guðmundsson and his son Björgólfur Thor Björgólfsson. Björgólfur Thor is currently the only Icelander on the Forbes list of the world’s wealthiest people, sitting in 1.121th place over the wealthiest people in the world.

Yesterday the local newspaper Morgunblaðið reported that its sources said Bill Gates, who continues to occupy the top spot on the Forbes list, was among the investors behind the hotel. The newspaper claimed it had very reliable sources confirming that Gates would be joining the group of investors. This news has not been confirmed, and the local news site visir.is reports that the lawyer representing the investors has refused to either confirm or deny the rumour.
