Couples planning a civil wedding, or awaiting divorce, will have to put those plans on hold while member unions of BHM, the Association of Academics, are on strike to press for higher pay, reports RÚV.
BHM has staged a number of strikes and work stoppages over the past 3 weeks. Members include lawyers at the Reykjavík district magistrate’s office, midwifes, and veterinarians, to name only a few.

Around 4,500 cases of all sorts currently await handling and, according to the Reykjavík district magistrate, Þórólfur Halldórsson, the cases continue to pile up.
Currently around 3,000 cases await registration, while another 1,500 family cases and 220 forced sales were postponed due to the strike.
Negotiation talks between the union and the government have not been successful so far.
