If you have been away from it for a while, one trip down the mountain is usually enough to refresh the memory; skiing is the best sport in the world.
Reykjavík is blessed with a small but decent ski and snowboarding area in the Bláfjöll mountain range, only 25 minutes by car southwest from the capital.
The area has sixteen lifts (three chair lifts) and can get quite crowded during the weekends, especially early in the day when the opening hours are from 10 to 17 (10am – 5pm). The weekdays are much quieter. With opening hours from 14 to 21 (2pm – 9pm) our favourite time is after dark when the huge floodlights along the pistes have been switched on. The small crowd will begin to thin out around 19.30 (7.30pm) and you can ski like crazy for the remaining 90 minutes.
On a clear night the view from the mountain is breathtaking, with the capital area drawing its shape with light on the horizon.
You can rent all necessary equipment (skis, snowboards and shoes) on site.
Opening hours (subject to change due to weather and snow conditions.
