The war cry that the Icelandic soccer team and its supporters made famous during the European soccer finals in France in June, is going to be adopted by the The Minnesota Vikings.

The National Football League (NFL) team will inaugurate their new home , the new U.S. Bank Stadium Minneapolis, on Sunday (18 September) when they welcome their arch rivals, the Green Bay Packers in the second week of the NFL season.

This will be the first ever NFL contest at U.S. Bank Stadium and the Vikings are of course determined to make a good start at their new home turf. It might be a tall order as the Packers have dominated in their past 13 meetings, with the Vikings having only coming on top once.

The Vikings have recruited two Icelandic athletes to help them turn this around. They will, however, not be competing on the field.

Bryan Harper, Vikings vice president for content and production explained in an interview with Minneapolis newspaper The Star Tribune that lots of Vikings fans had contacted the team about adopting the Icelandic chant following the viral video of the Icelandic national team and its supporters doing it together. To get it going the Vikings have enlisted Iceland soccer team captain Aron Gunnarsson and strongman and actor Hafþór Thor” Björnsson, who plays “The Mountain” in the Game of Thrones, to do a video appearance for a ceremonial handoff.

When the Star Tribune asked Harper whether Minnesotans at U.S. Bank Stadium could recreate the Icelandic magic, he said, “We’ll see.”

We at Iceland Insider believe they will succeed and the Viking war cry will become a stable in Minneapolis. In our national team captain Aron Gunnarsson, Minnesotans have the best available teacher.
