Icelanders are too heavy compared to other developed countries, according the 2016 Social Progress Index, a comprehensive framework developed for measuring social progress. The index is published by the US-based non-profit Social Progress Imperative and is the first to measure social progress independently of GDP.
Finland ranked as the world’s most socially progressive country, according to the index, while Canada comes in second and Denmark in third. Iceland shares joint 10th place with New Zealand.
Eygló Harðardóttir, minister of social affairs and housing, told the National Broadcasting Service that the country’s leaders must take note of the index’s results regarding the mental and physical wellbeing of the nation.
“Exercise is extremely important when battling obesity and mental issues. Studies show that mental wellbeing increases with regular exercise.”
Michael Green, the executive director of the Social Progress Imperative, said that policy-makers around the world would “do well to look at countries like Canada and Australia to learn what leaders are successfully doing to improve the lives of their citizens.”
